If you Liked Wonder, Read This…...

If you LikeD Wonder, Read This…...

If you read and enjoyed the book Wonder, then you will love Elvis and the Underdogs by Jenny Lee.
Both books share a very similar theme…don't pick on the underdog! Lee has a comical style of writing that will entertain any kid….even the most reluctant reader.

The story is about a 4th grade boy named Benji who breaks a record every year for the most days of school missed, because he is always in the hospital. Benji has a number of things wrong with him, including a serious allergy to walnuts, a terrible habit of fainting when he is nervous, and a new problem with seizures. It's his new diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy (epilepsy of an unknown origin) that allows him to acquire a therapy dog. His therapy dog arrives and Benji quickly learns that there is nothing normal about this dog. He's large (very large!) and he talks. Elvis and Benji become great friends. Elvis even helps Benji find his "pack" and Benji learns that maybe Billy, the school bully, has his own set of problems too. Not that this is an excuse for bullying Benji around, but maybe they have more in common than he realized.

I love both of these book so much I created novel studies to use with the 4th and 5th graders at my school. I feel that both novel studies would be appropriate for either grade, but I read Elvis and the Underdogs with my 4th graders and gave Wonder to our 5th grade teacher. Both classes really enjoyed the books and we able to teach a little character education at the same time!
